I-MMIGRATE Exhibition
2018 marked 70 years since the ship MV Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks, Essex, on 22 June 1948. It brought people from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other Caribbean islands to help rebuild the UK after the war (Ons.gov.Uk, 2019). Today, those who arrived to live in the UK between 1941 and 1971 have been labelled as the Windrush generation.
People have continued to migrate to the UK from the Commonwealth countries. In 1990’s many Africans came to Cheltenham through the education and cultural exchange programme - a partnership with Rendevous Society. The formation of a friendship town between Kisumu and Cheltenham Borough Council led many Kenyans to settle in Cheltenham.
This project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and marks the contribution and appreciation of our multicultural society.
